For six years I wrote "The Amateur Scientist" column for Scientific American. I am also the Founder and Executive Director of the Society for Amateur Scientists, and I am the only person to ever win a MacArthur "genius" Fellowship for science education. And I know that the best way to learn science is to do science yourself.
Science Design's Foucault Pendulum brings science to the people like few innovations I've ever seen. It allows anyone to recreate Jean Bernard Léon Foucault’s famous 1851 experiment that directly demonstrated that the Earth does indeed rotate on it's axis. I've used this Foucault Pendulum myself and found it easy to set up and operate. This is a classic experiment that should be in every high school physics lab. It also makes a great experiment to show to younger children.

Students are fascinated by the Foucault pendulums in museums, but with Science Design's room-sized Foucault pendulum we actually have the time to prove to ourselves that the Earth is turning. Their careful engineering made the pendulum easy to set up and use. The pendulum's size made it accessible. The ability to repeat this classic experiment allows students to grasp the very nature of science.

I have had a Science Design portable Foucault Pendulum operating continuously in my living room for the past 6 months. During that time it has withstood the constant foot traffic that passes within a couple of feet (no pun intended) as my wife and son go to and from the baby grand piano and their playing has not seemed to have any detrimental effect either. The clear wind shield protects against the inevitable drafts from open windows and doors as well as the vacuum cleaner when it is being used nearby. Through all this the pendulum has performed well within tolerances and prompted many questions and comments by young and old alike.
