Science Links for the Foucault Pendulum
At the north or south pole the pendulum should turn 360 degrees in 24 hours. At
the equator it will never turn and in between it turns 360 degrees in sin(latitude)/24.
There are a lot of good sites that explain why a Foucault Pendulum does this and here are some.
How is it possible to make a small version? In the late 1990’s, a physicist by the name of John Dooley started a series of experiments to create a pendulum that would not stop due to friction. He created a method of adding or pumping energy into the pendulum. This keeps the swing of the pendulum going indefinitely.
However, his pendulum was very difficult to build and use. You can see the results of his work.
A good explanation of the original Foucault Pendulum can be found here
Here is another good physics explanation from the UNSW
